Century High Students Team Up with County’s Social Services Agency on Literacy Program
Santa Ana, CA

Santa Ana Unified School District's Century High School Students have teamed up with the County of Orange Social Services Agency (SSA) to get more students into the reading habit. Team TEACH (Teacher Education Academy at Century High) has sponsored a book drive this week through March 14 to promote reading among youths, with a particular emphasis on ages birth through 5. Donors may drop off books at the front office of Century High located at 1401 S. Grand Ave. in care of TEACH Academy — a program in which over 25 Century High School students serve as volunteer readers at SSA with support from their teachers.

The book drive is part of the partnership effort which pairs the students with young children in the waiting area of the SSA Building, a place where they often come with parents to sign up for various social programs and services. Children participating in reading time receive a free gently used, donated book in good condition. The program — a collaboration with the Children and Families Commission’s Early Literacy Program, Social Services Agency and the Volunteer Center of Orange County — has been ongoing since the fall of 2007.

According to Project Director James Oveson, a teacher at Century High, the effort is designed to increase community literacy. “We picked this week to start our drive on the heels of the Read Across America campaign because lots of attention is drawn to Dr. Seuss’ many favorites that make reading fun. That’s what we hope to do by pairing up teen readers with younger counterparts. Additionally, since research shows that children need at least 25 books in their home to support later school success, we hope to get many donations,” Oveson said.

The partnership started as a brainchild of the Social Service Administration, which modeled it after Reach Out and Read, a successful national early literacy program providing trained volunteer readers to doctor’s offices throughout the country.

Reading at SSA takes place on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and on Thursdays from 3 - 4:30 p.m. in the building B lobby of SSA on Grand Street in Santa Ana. Students participating in the innovative Teach Academy take special classes during their curriculum with a focus and exposure to careers in education.
